Crowd Estimation: AI People Counting Software
Crowd counters: what they measure and when to use one
Crowd Estimation is the video analytics people counting tool in Axxon One. Effective crowd management relies on precise people counting to ensure safety and optimize the flow of individuals in various settings. AI people counting software monitors crowd density in real time — at a bustling public event, a busy transportation hub, or a crowded retail space — and raises an event when the number of people passes the threshold you set.
Real-time crowd monitoring from 10 to 10,000 people
Crowd Estimation monitors crowds in real time across scenes containing from 10 to 10,000 people, counting individuals within a specified area and generating an event whenever the number meets or exceeds, or falls to or below a threshold you define, depending on the trigger direction. It can also raise an event on every change in the count, regardless of any threshold. This is ideal for detecting or managing large gatherings, ensuring safety, and optimizing crowd flow in settings such as public events, transportation hubs, or retail spaces.
Precision for small-scale counting: the Neural Counter
The two detectors answer different questions. The Neural Counter precisely counts objects inside a defined area and is recommended for scenes with fewer than ten ones.
Crowd Estimation counts people. The Neural Counter uses the neural network you select — person, person viewed from above, vehicle, or person and vehicle — or a network trained for your own object classes. So Crowd Estimation suits open, populated spaces such as public events, transport hubs and retail floors, while the Neural Counter suits a bounded spot where every object matters.
Either detector can be used as a people counter for its own scale of scene.
Read about the Neural CounterAutomated responses for seamless operations
People counting systems can integrate with automated workflows. You set the number that matters and choose which direction raises the event: the crowd detector can trigger when the count is at or above your threshold, when it is at or below that point, or on every change in the reading.
On the way up, the event can start a macro that sends alerts, adjusts environmental controls, or initiates your crowd management protocol.
On the way down it does the opposite work, and that half is just as useful. An event below the threshold tells your team the area has cleared, so a second macro can return the site to its normal routine.
Applications of a People Counting System
Public Events and Gatherings
Large-scale events require efficient crowd control to ensure safety and smooth operations. Crowd counters let organizers monitor attendance in real time and manage crowd density effectively.
Transportation Hubs
Busy train stations, airports, and bus terminals benefit significantly from people counting systems. They enable authorities to predict peak times, optimize passenger flow, and ensure a better travel experience.
Retail Spaces
Retailers can use person counting to analyse customer behaviour, manage staff allocation, and improve overall shopper satisfaction. Understanding foot traffic patterns also aids in strategic decision-making for promotions and store layouts.
Crowd detector visualization: check that the count is right
The visualization displays a mask similar to a heat map that helps you understand whether the detector is counting people correctly. It is built for commissioning, configuration checks and demonstrations rather than for continuous monitoring by an operator. The current people count can also be overlaid on the camera view, which serves as a quick verification during setup and may support situational awareness during live monitoring.
FAQ
What is a crowd counter?
A crowd counter is video analytics that estimates how many people are inside a defined area of a camera scene and raises an event when that number crosses a threshold you set. In Axxon One this is the Crowd Estimation detector.
How many people can Crowd Estimation count?
It is designed for scenes containing from 10 to 10,000 people. For scenes with fewer than ten objects, use the Neural Counter instead.
What is the difference between crowd estimation and a people counter?
Crowd estimation counts how many people are inside an area at a given moment. An entrance-style people counter — the Visitors Counter detector in Axxon One — counts people crossing a line in and out and keeps a running total. Use crowd estimation for gatherings and density; use the Visitors Counter for doorways.
How do I know the detector is counting correctly?
Turn on the Crowd Detector visualization. It overlays a mask similar to a heat map on the scene, so you can see what the detector is reacting to while you configure it. You can also display the current people count directly in the camera view to verify accuracy during setup or support situational awareness during live monitoring.
Can Crowd Estimation alert me when a crowd disperses, not just when it forms?
Yes. The detector can be set to raise its event when the count falls to or below your threshold rather than when it exceeds it, or to raise an event on any change in the count. Either way the event can start a macro.
